A total beginner's guide to making strange games, experimental stories, and interactive experiences


Who is this for? Total beginners interested in learning and playing with foundational pieces of making experimental games and stories: ideas, themes, story, mechanics, and work plans.

My goals for this workshop:

  • You learn foundational pieces of designing experimental games
  • You make creative connections with other learners
  • You leave workshop feeling inspired and excited to make experimental games

What this workshop isn’t:

  • This is not a technical workshop
  • We will not use computers or learn game engines, though we will discuss game engine options at one point.
  • You don’t need any experience or interest in what most people refer to as ‘gaming’. Lack of experience is an asset.

There is a code of conduct. We aim to create a fun and safe learning environment for you. There will be participatory learning exercises, but you have the right to opt out of any exercise at any time.

Requirements Knowledge

You don’t need to bring any tools (but) you are welcome to bring:

  • paper
  • pens
  • toys

or any other tools that could help you creatively or practically

  • your own computer
